Mathematics Teacher Subject Specialism Training
Who is the Award For?
Our Subject Specialist Training Programmes are designed for teachers who are teaching outside of their specialism subject, or who wish to offer teaching in another subject. The programme is also suitable for returners to teaching. The programmes will improve both subject knowledge and classroom practitioner skills, allowing you to confidently teach up to new primary mathematics curriculum, new mathematics GCSEs and beyond, with the option to attend extra sessions for A-level.
Our blended-learning KS2/3 and KS4 mathematics is led by Dr Ferida McQuillan, NCETM PD lead, Senior Lead Practitioner and Head of Mathematics at Heartlands Academy Teaching School.
In addition, participants will be able to gain 30 master’s credits towards Birmingham City University Masters in Teaching and Learning/Masters in Educational Leadership. The course is fully funded by the National College for Teaching and Leadership, therefore there is no cost to the participant.
To be eligible for a place on the programme, you must meet the following criteria:
- You do not have an Initial Teacher Training (ITT) specialism in Mathematics, or would benefit from updated subject specialism training.
- You are currently teaching in a maintained secondary school, maintained or non-maintained special school or academy, or you are a qualified teacher, not currently teaching, who wishes to return to teaching.
- Your school/academy is willing to support the application and provide opportunities to attend all face-to-face taught sessions.
- Face-to-face days at Heartlands Academy or other partner school(s) as appropriate.
- An optional session for those wishing to explore A-level subject knowledge.
- Lesson observations, peer support, action research and other activities as appropriate.
- Optional days for those wishing to gain 30 master’s credits.
Face-to-face delivery sessions take place at Heartlands Academy or at partner schools, enabling a focus on subject knowledge, evidence-based pedagogies and effective learning through practical work and observations where appropriate. The training includes a focus on current initiatives, such as recent changes to practical work and its assessment. There are opportunities to practice techniques in the classroom and to network and learn from other practising teachers.
In these face to face days, we cover the key content for Key Stage 2, 3, 4 and 5 Mathematics, including the material in the new GCSE syllabus.
