Sport BTEC Level 3


The BTEC Sport Level 3 course looks to expand on the knowledge gained throughout the Level 2 course in Key Stage 4. The course is designed to enable students to gain both academic and practical experience in a multitude of units relating to sports performance.

This course allows us to develop skills within the state of the art Heartlands Academy sports facilities, and apply key analysis within practical sport performance. The course provides progression opportunities into vocationally relevant employment, such as sports coaching, or higher education.

The Level 3 Sport BTEC incorporates two externally assessed units of work, delivered directly by the examing board Pearson. These take the form of one exam based assessment on anatomy and physiology (due to take place in June 2017) and one ‘task-based’ exercise, taken under controlled conditions. There is also an element of traditional BTEC study, consisting of set assignments with stringent deadline dates.

During Year 12, students will complete the Extended Certificate in BTEC Sport Level 3. This will be the equivalent of one A Level and will involve the study of the following Units.

  • Unit 1 – Anatomy and Physiology (Externally Assessed, June 2017)
  • Unit 7 – Fitness Training and Programming for Health, Sport and Well-Being
  • Unit 3 – Professional Development in the Sports Industry
  • Unit 4 – Sports Leadership

Those students who are successful in completing the Extended Certificate in Year 12 will be eligible to progress onto studying the Foundation Diploma. This suite of study is the equivalent of 1.5 A Levels. The following Units will be a focus in the second year of study.

  • Unit 7 – Practical Sports Performance
  • Unit 6 – Sports Psychology
  • Unit 5 – Application of Fitness Testing
