Facilities

The Science department has seven laboratory teaching rooms, that are all fully equipped to deliver Biology, Chemistry and Physics. We have a wide variety of science equipment in order to deliver engaging, practical based science lessons to all Heartlands Academy students, as well as meeting all of the practical requirements for the new KS4 and KS5 Science curricula.

Key Stage 3 Curriculum

The Science Department follow AQA’s Key Stage 3 Science syllabus where the teaching is split up into 10 big ideas; Forces, Electromagnetism, Energy, Waves, Matter, Reactions, Earth, Organisms, Eco-system and Genes. Students encounter each of the topics in Year 7 and Year 8, encountering increasingly more complex ideas associated with each topic.

In Year 9 students prepare for the demands of new GCSE curriculum using a Key Stage 3 scheme of work written by the teachers at Heartlands Academy, based on 5 fundamental scientific ideas of Atoms, Changes, Energy, Life and Ecosystems.

Key Stage 4 Curriculum

From September 2016 most Year 10 students at Heartlands Academy will be studying the new AQA GCSE Combined Science- Trilogy specification and get two Science GCSE’s. Some students will choose to study separate sciences when making their options choices in Year 9, and will be study the AQA GCSE Biology, Chemistry and Physics specifications.

Over the course of two years all students study the following topics:

Biology:

  • Cell Biology
  • Organisation
  • Infection and Response
  • Bioenergetics
  • Homeostasis and Response
  • Inheritance
  • variation and Evolution
  • Ecology

Chemistry:

  • Atomic Structure and the Periodic Table
  • Bonding, Structure, and the Properties of Matter
  • Quantitative Chemistry
  • Chemical Changes
  • Energy Changes
  • The Rate and Extent of Chemical Change
  • Organic Chemistry
  • Chemical Analysis
  • Chemistry of the Atmosphere
  • Using Resources

Physics:

  • Energy, Electricity
  • Particle Model of Matter
  • Atomic Structure
  • Forces
  • Waves
  • Magnetism Electromagnetism
  • Space Physics (GCSE Physics only)

Key Stage 5 Curriculum

We offer an A Level in Computer Science as well as the BCS ECDL Advanced Level 3 course.

AQA GCSE Computer Science

At Heartlands Academy we offer all three Science A levels: Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Each A level course is delivered by specialist science teachers, and they are amongst the most popular choices at the Sixth Form.

The A level Biology course delivered at Heartlands is OCR’s A level Biology A. The modules covered are;

  • Module 1: Development of Practical Skills in Biology
  • Module 2: Foundations of Biology
  • Module 3: Exchange and Transport
  • Module 4: Biodiversity, Evolution and Disease
  • Module 5: Communication, Homeostasis and Energy
  • Module 6: Genetics, Evolution and Ecosystems

The A level Chemistry course delivered at Heartlands is OCR’s A level Chemistry A. The modules covered are;

  • Unit 1: Development of Practical Skills in Chemistry
  • Unit 2: Foundations of Chemistry
  • Unit 3: Periodic Table and Energy
  • Unit 4: Core Organic Chemistry
  • Unit 5: Physical Chemistry and Transition Elements
  • Unit 6: Organic Chemistry and Analysis

The A level Chemistry course delivered at Heartlands is AQA’s A level Physics. The modules covered are;

  • Unit 1: Measurements and their Errors
  • Unit 2: Particles and Radiation
  • Unit 3: Waves
  • Unit 4: Mechanics and Materials
  • Unit 5: Electricity
  • Unit 6: Further Mechanics and Thermal Physics
  • Unit 7: Fields and their Consequences
  • Unit 8: Nuclear Physics
  • Unit 9: Astrophysics
